Recorded live at the Café Bohemia in New York City on November 23, 1955, this session captures the original edition of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in their raw, hard-swinging glory. Released later as Volume 3, the album completes the legendary series of recordings that introduced the world to the Messengers’ hard bop sound.

The lineup features Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone), Horace Silver (piano), Doug Watkins (bass), and Art Blakey (drums) — a band often referred to as “the original Messengers.” Their interplay is fiery and soulful, with Dorham and Mobley’s horn lines soaring over Silver’s bluesy piano and Blakey’s thunderous drumming.

With its mix of originals and standards, At the Café Bohemia, Volume 3 is a vital live document — showing how the Jazz Messengers forged the blueprint for hard bop in a packed New York club.
