Originally released in 1959 on Blue Note, this self-titled album captures a transitional lineup of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers just before the arrival of Wayne Shorter. Featuring Lee Morgan (trumpet), Benny Golson (tenor saxophone), Bobby Timmons (piano), and Jymie Merritt (bass), the record helped define the group’s soulful, blues-driven hard bop sound.

The session includes Golson’s timeless composition Blues March, which became a Jazz Messengers anthem, along with Along Came Betty and Timmons’s gospel-tinged Moanin’. Blakey’s powerful drumming anchors the ensemble, while Morgan’s fiery trumpet and Golson’s warm tenor add balance and depth.
