Cut in New York in 1957, this blistering RCA session captures Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with a hard-hitting frontline: Bill Hardman (trumpet), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Sam Dockery (piano) and Jimmy “Spanky” De Brest (bass). It’s a rare snapshot of McLean and Griffin together on record, and the band comes out swinging from the downbeat.

Fierce horns, volcanic Blakey press-rolls, and surging hard-bop energy make this an essential Jazz Messengers date from the RCA era.
