Alfa Mist – Antiphon (2021 Sekito UK 2LP Vinyl)

First self-released in 2017 and reissued on Sekito Records in 2021, Antiphon is the record that introduced Alfa Mist as one of the key voices in London’s contemporary jazz scene. A producer, pianist and arranger with roots in hip hop and soul, Alfa blends warm Rhodes chords, live drums and cinematic harmony into a sound that feels introspective and streetwise at once.

Across eight movements, the album drifts through post-bop phrasing, neo-soul rhythm and sampled intimacy. Keep On opens with a slow build of piano and horns before Jordan Rakei’s voice floats in, calm and searching. Potential and Breathe bring in Kaya Thomas-Dyke, her vocals sitting deep in the groove, while 7th October and Nucleus find Alfa stretching into more meditative space, his chords folding over the beat like conversation. The playing is fluid and open, with Rudi Creswick on bass, Jamie Leeming on guitar, Mansur Brown adding flashes of fire and Jamie Houghton driving the rhythm.

This 2021 gatefold 2LP reissue presents Antiphon in full analog warmth, pressed to heavy vinyl and packaged with Sekito’s minimalist artwork. Still the most personal and timeless of Alfa Mist’s releases, it stands as a defining statement in the rise of UK jazz— moody, melodic and deeply human.
