Albert Ayler - Prophecy Vinyl LP - 1978 Japanese ESP-Disk' Jazz Masterpiece Collection Mono Reissue with Insert
Albert Ayler's revolutionary approach to free jazz reaches full expression on this live recording from New York's Cellar Cafe on 14 June 1964. Featuring the trio of Ayler on tenor saxophone, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sonny Murray on percussion, the session captures Ayler's distinctive sound: simultaneously primitive and sophisticated, drawing from New Orleans marching bands, gospel music, and avant-garde exploration. His massive tone, wide vibrato, and use of extended techniques (overblowing, multiphonics, extreme register shifts) created music that divided listeners but profoundly influenced free jazz's development. Released in Japan in 1978 as part of ESP-Disk's Jazz Masterpiece Collection and manufactured by Nippon Phonogram, this mono pressing includes a two-sided Japanese insert.
The five tracks showcase Ayler's compositional approach, built around simple, folk-like melodies that serve as springboards for intense collective improvisation. "Spirits" and "Wizard" demonstrate his method of stating themes then abandoning conventional development for ecstatic exploration. The two variations of "Ghosts" bracket the title track "Prophecy", Ayler's most famous composition featuring a nursery rhyme-like melody transformed through relentless repetition and increasingly frenzied playing. Peacock's bass work provides both harmonic grounding and melodic commentary, while Murray's percussion approaches drumming as collective texture rather than timekeeping, creating waves of sound that support and challenge Ayler's saxophone.
This live recording captures the raw energy and spiritual intensity of Ayler's music in a club setting, the audience's presence adding urgency to the performance. Ayler's stated goal was to connect with something primal and spiritual through music, his playing achieving transcendent moments that feel closer to religious ecstasy than conventional jazz improvisation.
