Originally released in 1957 on Riverside, That’s Him! is the breakout second album from vocalist Abbey Lincoln, confirming her as one of the most distinctive voices in jazz. Supported by an all-star cast dubbed the “Riverside Jazz Stars” — Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Max Roach (drums) — Lincoln delivers a program of ballads, blues, and standards with passion and individuality.

Her voice, at once smoky and direct, brings fresh emotional weight to classics like Tender as a Rose and Don’t Explain. The band responds in kind: Rollins contributes soulful obbligatos, Dorham adds warmth, and Roach’s drumming gives everything a crisp, modern pulse.

Poised, intimate, and commanding, That’s Him! remains one of the great vocal jazz albums of the 1950s — a perfect introduction to Lincoln’s artistry.
