Your Brother's Keeper is a London collective assembled by drummer and producer Jake Long, who also leads Maisha. The group's membership, Ali MacSween on piano, synthesizers and modular effects, Axel Kaner-Lidstrom on trumpet, Twm Dylan on double bass, Tim Doyle on percussion and Chelsea Carmichael on tenor saxophone, came together around a shared commitment to collective improvisation and ensemble listening rather than solo-led jazz. The group's connection with Gary Bartz developed through Long's earlier collaboration with Bartz via Maisha, including direct-to-disc sessions for Night Dreamer Records in Haarlem. "Where Rivers Meet" (Brownswood, 2026), their debut release as Your Brother's Keeper, pairs the ensemble with Bartz across seven tracks recorded in a studio setting that allows more compositional development than the direct-to-disc format. Released in June 2026 as Brownswood Recordings marked its twentieth anniversary, the album brings Bartz's five-decade lineage, which runs through Miles Davis's early 1970s electric band, Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Art Blakey, into contact with a generation of London musicians actively reshaping the language of contemporary jazz.
