Sven Wunder
Composer, Producer (b. c.1984, Stockholm)
Sven Wunder is the artist name of Joel Danell, a Stockholm-based composer, son of Swedish jazz drummer Nils Danell. Growing up with world-renowned musicians rehearsing in his basement, Danell became an accomplished jazz musician, music producer, and film/TV composer. He created Sven Wunder in 2018 after completing a soundtrack commission. His debut Doğu Çiçekleri (Eastern Flowers, 2019) was recorded with local musicians and Swedish Arts Council support, released on his Piano Piano Records label. The limited vinyl became a collector's item, circulated through Stockholm's Record Mania before Light in the Attic US distribution and multiple represses. His music blends Anatolian rock and European jazz-funk with groovy organs, synthesisers, saz, appealing to psych, prog, folk, jazz, and hip-hop audiences.
Albums explored different regions: Wabi Sabi (2020) incorporated Japanese jazz and Asian sounds; Natura Morta (2021) channelled Italian library music; Late Again (2023), a nocturnal collection with orchestral pop-jazz, was nominated for Swedish Grammy Jazz Album of the Year 2024. He worked with Danny Brown (Quaranta's "Hanami"), Madlib Invazion Library Series, and Tyler the Creator's Louis Vuitton campaign featured "Take A Break". Mr Bongo supported him via 45s and Record Club compilations. In 2024, Wunder debuted at Stockholm Jazz Festival and released a joint venture with Drumetrics.
