Sonny Stitt

Sonny Stitt

Sonny Stitt (1924–1982), bebop/hard-bop alto and tenor saxophone virtuoso. First compared to Charlie Parker on alto, he forged a muscular, blues-drenched tenor voice and laser-clean articulation. A tireless bandleader and Jazz at the Philharmonic standout, he sparred with Gene Ammons on the Boss Tenors albums and shines on Sonny Side Up and Stitt Plays Bird.
