Oliver Nelson (1932–1975), saxophonist, composer and one of jazz’s great arrangers. His masterpiece The Blues and the Abstract Truth yielded the standard “Stolen Moments.” Beyond his own dates (Afro/American Sketches, Skull Session), he arranged/conducted big-band sessions for Verve/Impulse! (e.g., Jimmy Smith’s Bashin’) and later became a prolific Hollywood film/TV and pop orchestrator.
