Double Bass and Vocals | b. 1980s

Miles Mosley was named after Miles Davis, grew up in Hollywood, California, and studied upright bass with John Clayton, Ray Brown and Al McKibbon. He spent the early part of his professional career as a session and touring musician for artists including Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Jeff Beck, Joni Mitchell and Jonathan Davis, while developing a distinctive upright bass approach that incorporated bow technique, effects pedals, looping and his own vocals into a single performer's vocabulary. As a founding member of the West Coast Get Down, the Los Angeles collective built around Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Ronald Bruner Jr., Cameron Graves, Ryan Porter and Terrace Martin, he became part of the group whose members played on Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" in 2015, Mosley appearing on three tracks. His debut solo album "Uprising" (Verve, 2017), featuring West Coast Get Down members, drew from 1970s soul, funk and jazz without treating them as separate categories, and its lead single "Abraham" was named one of NPR's Top 100 songs of 2016. "Uprising" debuted at number four on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. Mosley continues to work as a leader, session musician, composer and producer, scoring for film, television and video games alongside his performance career.
