Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), trumpeter, vocalist and bandleader, reshaped jazz with dazzling improvisation, buoyant swing and joyous charisma. From the Hot Five/Seven sides—“West End Blues,” “Heebie Jeebies”—to later hits “Hello, Dolly!” and “What a Wonderful World,” “Satchmo” became jazz’s first global star and a pioneer of scat singing and small-group virtuosity.
