Ian Carr

Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Composer, Writer (1933-2009)

Born 21 April 1933 in Dumfries, Scotland, Ian Carr grew up in South Shields and County Durham. He studied English Literature at Newcastle University from 1952, playing trumpet in modern jazz bands. His professional career began in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne with brother Mike's EmCee Five. From 1964-1969, Carr co-led the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet with pianist Michael Garrick. Regarded as one of most influential modern British jazz groups. they released five albums on EMI Columbia's Lansdowne Series. In 1969, Carr formed jazz-rock group Nucleus with Karl Jenkins, Brian Smith, Chris Spedding, Jeff Clyne and John Marshall. He wrote a regular column for BBC Music Magazine and in 1987 was appointed associate professor at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Carr died 25 February 2009 aged 75 from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
