Herbie Hancock (born 1940), pianist, composer and electronic pioneer, bridged post-bop, funk and future-leaning jazz. After reshaping small-group interplay in Miles Davis’s 1960s Second Great Quintet, he led era-defining sessions: Takin’ Off, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage, Head Hunters, Future Shock. Signature pieces include “Watermelon Man,” “Cantaloupe Island,” “Chameleon” and “Rockit.” Grammy- and Oscar-winning icon.
