Elvin Jones

Elvin Jones

Elvin Jones (1927–2004), polyrhythmic drum innovator, drove John Coltrane’s Classic Quartet (with McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Garrison) on A Love Supreme, Crescent and Live at Birdland. His tidal triplets and rolling cross-rhythms redefined modern timekeeping. After Coltrane he led the Jazz Machine, mentoring Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman. Brother of Hank and Thad Jones.
