Donald Byrd (1932–2013), trumpeter, spanned hard bop, soul jazz and sleek ’70s jazz-funk. A Blue Note mainstay—from Royal Flush, Free Form and the choral A New Perspective (“Cristo Redentor”) to electric landmarks Electric Byrd, Ethiopian Knights, Black Byrd and Places and Spaces. A PhD and Howard University educator, he founded The Blackbyrds.
