Don Glori
Bass, Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer, Composer | Melbourne/London
Don Glori is an anagram for producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Li, originally from Naarm (Melbourne, Australia) and now based in London, traversing jazz, funk, soul, RnB, samba, broken-beat, house, and Brazilian music. Cutting his teeth touring with opera companies, cabarets, and sessioning for bands from a young age, Li stepped into the limelight as bandleader in 2022 with his debut album Welcome, which garnered support from BBC, NTS, Worldwide FM, Rinse FM, and KEXP. The album was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and multiple Music Victoria awards, showcasing Li's distinctive voice through carefully considered compositions facilitating heavy doses of improvisation.
His first offering, Dawn Calling EP, was released December 2020 on Nothin Personal, recorded live to tape in February 2020. The record traverses melancholic, textural landscapes with spiritual jazz overtones through to synth-laden grooves built around rhythm-centric bass and drums, touching on jazz, broken-beat, house, and Brazilian music. Taking influence from Azymuth, SAULT, Jordan Rakei, Lynda Dawn, and Donny Hathaway, Li deconstructed sounds he loves and recontextualised them into his signature sound. His second album Don't Forget to Have Fun appeared June 2024 on UK label DeepMatter Records, channelling Mildlife, Azymuth, and Steely Dan, whilst forthcoming album Paper Can't Wrap Fire is signed to Brighton's Mr Bongo. Now London-based, he has performed at London Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott's, Strawberry Fields, Panama Festival, and Dark MOFO, supporting Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Emma-Jean Thackray, and Turnover.
