Charles Lloyd (born 1938), Memphis-born saxophonist/flutist and spiritual seeker. After early stints with Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley, his trailblazing 1966–67 quartet with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee/Ron McClure and Jack DeJohnette scored a hit with Forest Flower. A radiant later career on ECM and Blue Note—New Quartet, Sangam, The Marvels—melds folk, gospel and raga hues.
