Cannonball Adderley (1928–1975), exuberant alto saxophonist, bridged bebop and soul jazz. After starring with Miles Davis on Milestones and Kind of Blue, he led a hard-grooving band with his brother Nat, yielding classics like Somethin’ Else, The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco (“This Here”), and the hits “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and “Work Song.”
