Art Lande
Piano | b. 1947
Art Lande was born in New York on February 5, 1947, grew up on Long Island, studied at Williams College, and moved to San Francisco in 1969. He played electric piano in a quintet with bassist Steve Swallow from 1970 to 1972 before entering the ECM orbit through his meeting with Jan Garbarek. The duo album “Red Lanta” (ECM, 1974), recorded in November 1973 and comprising five original Lande compositions for piano alongside Garbarek’s soprano saxophone, bass saxophone and flutes, was praised by Down Beat as one of ECM’s finest releases. Lande formed Rubisa Patrol in 1974 with trumpeter Mark Isham, bassist Bill Douglass and drummer Glenn Cronkhite, touring Europe extensively and recording for ECM through three albums: “Rubisa Patrol” (1976), “Desert Marauders” (1977) and the independently released “The Story of Ba-Ku” (1750 Arch Street, 1978). He recorded “Skylight” with Gary Peacock for ECM in 1981 and a trio session with Paul McCandless and David Samuels. He taught at the Cornish College of the Arts, then at a jazz school in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and from 1987 in Boulder, Colorado, where he taught at Naropa University and collaborated with Allen Ginsberg. He has appeared on over seventy albums and composed over two hundred and fifty original compositions.
