Ancient Infinity Orchestra
Formed c. 2018
Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a Leeds-based fifteen-member jazz ensemble formed in the late 2010s by double-bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey. The ensemble draws musicians from the northern England contemporary jazz community, with saxophonist Mathew Cliffe, who also performs with Matthew Halsall, as a key recurring member. The lineup spans two double basses, harp, saxophones, clarinets, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flutes, mandolin, congas, piano, drum kit and assorted percussion, organised around a collective music-making ethos in which instruments are available to any member at any point in a performance or recording session. Their music sits explicitly in the spiritual and modal jazz tradition of Pharoah Sanders, Alice and John Coltrane and Sun Ra. "Solar Seasons" (self-released, 2020) was their debut recording; "River of Light" (Gondwana, 2023), produced by Matthew Halsall and released on his Gondwana Records label, is their most widely heard album, recorded at The Nave studio in Pudsey across three days in August 2022 with a choir contributing to six of its ten tracks. "It's Always About Love" followed in 2025. "It's Always About Liberation" (Universal UK, 2026), described as their darkest and most searching album to date, was released in July 2026. The group remains active and based in Leeds.
