Alabaster DePlume
Saxophone, Spoken Word, Composition | Born 1981
Angus Fairbairn's Alabaster DePlume project represents contemporary jazz at its most vulnerable and unconventional. A self-taught saxophonist from Manchester who learned the instrument in 2007, he combines breathy, whisper-quiet tenor saxophone with spoken word poetry and spiritual jazz improvisation. His 2022 album Gold – Go Forward in the Courage of Your Love brought widespread attention, recorded with rotating musicians at London's Total Refreshment Centre with intentionally minimal rehearsal.
Based in London, DePlume runs monthly Peach events creating spontaneous collaborations within the UK jazz scene. His music blends jazz, folk, chamber elements, and activist philosophy, addressing themes of dignity, collective care, and political engagement through simple circular melodies and mantric vocals. Released on International Anthem Recording Co., his recent work includes Come with Fierce Grace (2023) and A Blade Because a Blade Is Whole (2025), continuing his exploration of music as communal healing and radical openness.
