Collection: Tortoise

Formed in Chicago in 1990, Tortoise stands as one of the most influential instrumental groups of the past three decades, pioneering the post-rock movement that redefined independent music's possibilities. The ensemble began as a bass and drums duo with Doug McCombs and John Herndon, inspired by Jamaican rhythm sections like Sly and Robbie, before expanding to include Dan Bitney, John McEntire, and eventually jazz guitarist Jeff Parker. Their genre-agnostic approach seamlessly blends krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica, and jazz, creating what the Chicago Tribune called "mood music that refuses to be shoved into the background".

The 1996 landmark Millions Now Living Will Never Die, featuring the 20-minute epic "Djed", established Tortoise as the leading voice of post-rock's global movement. TNT (1998), recorded over ten months with Parker's jazz sensibilities now central to the sound, remains their most jazz-inflected work. Members' prolific side projects include Isotope 217, The Sea and Cake, Chicago Underground, and Brokeback, whilst McEntire has produced everyone from Stereolab to Wilco. Seven studio albums across 30 years showcase a band that floats free between styles, creating timeless music that defies categorisation.
