ganavya was born in New York to an American father and a Tamil mother, moved to Chennai with her mother and brother when her parents separated, and spent her childhood on the pilgrimage trail learning harikathā, the South Indian art form of musical storytelling, and training in Carnatic music and bharatanatyam under formal teachers in Chennai. She returned to the United States as a teenager, earned degrees at Broward Community College and Florida International University, and was recommended to Harvard by Quincy Jones, who heard her sing. Graduate degrees followed at Berklee College of Music, UCLA and Harvard, four in total, and a performance career that grew steadily through collaboration rather than conventional music industry routes. She co-founded the We Have Voice Collective, a non-hierarchical organisation for musicians; she worked extensively with theatre director Peter Sellars, most recently co-creating the opera "Nine Jewelled Deer" with set design by Julie Mehretu; she appeared at SAULT's 2023 London debut; and she co-produced her second album with Shabaka Hutchings for his Native Rebel Recordings. "Aikyam: Onnu" (2018), her debut, translated jazz standards into Tamil alongside devotional abhangs. "like the sky I've been too quiet" (Native Rebel, 2024), featuring Floating Points, Tom Herbert, Carlos Niño and Leafcutter John, moved between Carnatic tradition and ambient electronics in a setting that The Quietus described as "a combination of English and Tamil, ambient and propulsive, Carnatic song and Appalachian folk." The Wall Street Journal called her "among modern music's most compelling vocalists." Barack Obama included the album on his listening list. "Daughter of a Temple" (LEITER, 2024), on Nils Frahm's label, and "Nilam" (2025) followed in quick succession. She is still active and remains one of the most singular vocal presences in contemporary music.
