Ron Carter - Spanish Blue Vinyl LP - 1975 Japanese CTI Records Gatefold

  • CTI's lush fusion aesthetic - Creed Taylor's signature production with Van Gelder engineering
  • All-star lineup - Hubert Laws, Billy Cobham, Roland Hanna, Jay Berliner support Carter's vision
  • Original 1975 Japanese gatefold - King Records pressing with superior sound quality

Bassist Ron Carter's 1974 CTI album showcases the label's signature fusion approach: sophisticated jazz musicianship meeting lush production values and Latin-influenced grooves. Recorded in November 1974 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio with an all-star ensemble featuring flutist Hubert Laws, guitarist Jay Berliner, pianists Roland Hanna and Leon Pendarvis, drummer Billy Cobham, and percussionist Ralph MacDonald, the four extended compositions blend Latin rhythms with jazz improvisation and contemporary production aesthetics. Producer Creed Taylor's vision for accessible yet sophisticated fusion finds ideal expression in Carter's compositions, the bassist's melodic sensibility and impeccable time making him perfect vehicle for CTI's crossover ambitions. Released in Japan in 1975 by King Record Co. Ltd. in gatefold format, this pressing captures CTI Records at their creative and commercial peak.

Carter's bass work, both acoustic double bass and electric, anchors the sessions while his compositions provide frameworks that balance written material with improvisation. The title track "El Noche Sol" and "Sabado Sombrero" incorporate Latin rhythmic elements through Berliner's nylon-string guitar and MacDonald's percussion, while Carter's reimagining of Miles Davis' "So What" transforms the modal jazz classic into fusion context. Laws' flute adds melodic colour throughout, his playing combining jazz phrasing with the smooth tone CTI recordings favoured. Cobham's drumming, capable of explosive power yet tastefully restrained here, demonstrates his versatility beyond the fusion-rock settings he pioneered with Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Van Gelder's engineering and the CTI production aesthetic create the label's characteristic sound: close-miked instruments, lush reverb, careful dynamic control, and emphasis on sonic beauty alongside musical content. The approach occasionally drew criticism from jazz purists yet produced commercially successful and musically sophisticated recordings that introduced fusion to broader audiences. Hanna and Pendarvis' piano and electric piano work adds harmonic depth, while Berliner's guitar provides both rhythmic support and melodic statements.
