How to Clean and Store Vinyl Records in Australia: A Collector's Guide

There is a moment on the first track of Bill Evans's Waltz for Debby, about forty seconds in, where Scott LaFaro's bass drops beneath the piano and the room at the Village Vanguard goes almost silent. You can hear someone clink a glass. If there is dust in the groove, you will hear that too: a soft, repeating tick that sits right in the frequency range of LaFaro's fingers on the strings. It ruins the recording. Not dramatically, not in the way a skip ruins a record, but in the way a smudge on a window ruins a view. You stop hearing the music and start hearing the medium.

That kind of quiet passage is what makes jazz records particularly unforgiving. A rock record can bury a little surface noise under distortion and volume. Jazz, with its dynamic range and its silences, cannot. A brushed cymbal on a 1964 Blue Note pressing recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, a solo acoustic bass on an ECM record, the decay of a piano chord on a Japanese pressing of Sunday at the Village Vanguard: these are moments where the condition of the vinyl is the condition of the music.

If you collect jazz on vinyl, cleaning and storage are not optional. They are part of the hobby. And if you collect in Australia, you are dealing with climate conditions that make both of those things harder than they need to be.

Before every play: the carbon fibre brush

This is the single most important habit a vinyl collector can build, and the cheapest to maintain. Before you drop the needle, brush the record.

The standard here is the AudioQuest carbon fibre brush, which has been in production for over thirty-five years and is available from most Australian hi-fi retailers (Melbourne Hi Fi, Audio Connection in Sydney, Audio Trends, and others typically stock it). The current version uses over a million conductive carbon fibres thin enough to reach into the groove and lift dust, while the conductive gold contacts on the handle drain static charge through your hand. It costs around $50 to $60 in Australia and will last years.

The technique matters more than the tool. Hold the brush lightly against the spinning record for two or three rotations, letting the fibres collect the dust. Then, with the brush still on the record, slowly draw it towards you and off the edge, taking the dust with it. Do not lift the brush straight up off the surface: that just drops the dust back where it was.

A dry brush will not fix a genuinely dirty record. What it will do is prevent a clean record from becoming one. Dust left in the groove gets ground into the vinyl by the stylus, creating permanent damage that no amount of cleaning can reverse. Two minutes of brushing before and after each play is the cheapest insurance your collection has.

When a brush is not enough: wet cleaning

Every secondhand record you buy needs a proper wet clean before you play it. No exceptions. You do not know what has been in that groove: decades of dust and oily fingerprints from careless handling, residue from old cleaning products, cigarette smoke, mould. A carbon fibre brush will not touch any of that.

There are broadly four levels of wet cleaning, and which one makes sense depends on the size of your collection, how much secondhand vinyl you buy, and your budget.

Bath cleaners: Spin-Clean and Knosti Disco Antistat

These are the entry point, and for most collectors with moderate buying habits, they are genuinely sufficient.

The Spin-Clean Record Washer MKII is a simple plastic bath with velvet pads and rollers. You fill it with distilled water and a few capfuls of Spin-Clean's own alcohol-free cleaning fluid, slot the record in, and rotate it manually. Both sides clean simultaneously. It is distributed in Australia by Pro-Ject Audio and available from most hi-fi dealers. The Spin-Clean is effective, dead simple to use, and has been a staple of home record cleaning for decades.

The Knosti Disco Antistat is a German-made alternative that has been on the market, largely unchanged, since 1978. It works on the same bath principle but uses goat hair brushes instead of velvet pads, which arguably penetrate the groove more effectively. It also includes a label clamp to keep the cleaning fluid off the centre label, and a drying rack. Apollo Hi-Fi in Sydney (importers since the 1960s), Carlton Audio Visual, and Sound Gallery are among the Australian stockists. Pricing sits around $130 to $210 depending on the kit.

Both of these get the job done for routine cleaning. They will not rescue a record that is heavily mould-affected or deeply contaminated, but for the typical dusty secondhand find, either one will make a noticeable difference to the sound. I would give a slight edge to the Knosti for used jazz records specifically, because the goat hair bristles do a better job of loosening the stubborn grime that tends to accumulate in the quieter passages of older pressings.

The main limitation of bath cleaners is that they reuse the same water for multiple records. You are cleaning record number ten in water that already has the grime from records one through nine in it. Change the solution frequently.

Vacuum record cleaning machines

A vacuum RCM applies cleaning fluid to the record surface, then vacuums it off along with the dissolved contaminants. The key advantage over a bath cleaner is that the dirty fluid is removed completely, so nothing gets redeposited in the groove.

The Pro-Ject VC-S3 is the most commonly available vacuum RCM in Australia, stocked widely through the Pro-Ject dealer network. It uses Pro-Ject's own alcohol-free Wash It 2 cleaning fluid and a goat hair brush. You apply the fluid, scrub gently with the brush, then engage the vacuum arm. Pricing is around $1,000 to $1,100.

Vacuum machines are noisy (they are, after all, essentially vacuum cleaners) and they clean one side at a time. But the results are a clear step up from bath cleaning, particularly on older records with embedded grime. If you regularly buy vintage jazz pressings, original Blue Notes, or Japanese pressings from the 1970s and 1980s, a vacuum RCM earns its price back in preserved vinyl.

Ultrasonic cleaners

Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves (typically 40kHz) to generate microscopic cavitation bubbles in water. These bubbles collapse on contact with the record surface, dislodging contaminants at a level that no brush or pad can reach. It is the same technology used for cleaning surgical instruments and jewellery, applied to vinyl.

The HumminGuru was one of the first to make ultrasonic record cleaning affordable for home collectors. The original HG01 uses a compact 350ml water bath and operates at 40kHz, cleaning and drying a record in about seven to fifteen minutes. The newer HumminGuru Nova upgrades the motor and drying system. Both are available in Australia through Amazon and select hi-fi dealers, with the HG01 typically around $500 to $600 and the Nova higher. You can use plain distilled water, no cleaning fluid required, though HumminGuru sells its own additive.

At the other end of the ultrasonic market, the Degritter Mk II is the reference-grade option. It operates at 120kHz (finer cavitation, more even cleaning), uses a separate active filtration system so the water stays clean, and has fully automated wash and dry cycles. It is imported to Australia by Pure Music Group. The price, however, is in the $5,000 to $5,500 range. It is an extraordinary machine. It is also a lot of money for record cleaning.

For a jazz collector working through a stack of secondhand records, the HumminGuru sits at the sweet spot between price and performance. Ultrasonic cleaning is particularly good at reviving records that look visually clean but still sound noisy, because it removes contamination that has been pressed into the groove by years of play with a worn stylus.

The isopropyl alcohol question

If you have spent any time on the Steve Hoffman Forums, Reddit vinyl communities, or any hi-fi discussion board, you will have encountered the debate about isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in record cleaning solutions.

The concern is real, if sometimes overstated. Vinyl records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains plasticisers (usually phthalates) that keep the material flexible. These plasticisers are physically embedded between the polymer chains but not chemically bonded to them, which means solvents can theoretically leach them out. Dr Bruce Maier, who created the original Discwasher cleaning system in the 1970s, cautioned against high concentrations of IPA for this reason.

The practical reality is more nuanced. Brief contact with diluted IPA (the typical 10 to 25 per cent concentration found in most DIY cleaning solutions) does not appear to cause measurable damage to post-1960s vinyl pressings. Michael Fremer, writing for Analog Planet, has noted that for IPA to leach plasticisers meaningfully, the fluid would need to be in contact with the record for at least an hour. A quick wet clean followed by immediate drying or vacuuming is well short of that threshold.

That said, there is no reason to take the risk when good alcohol-free alternatives exist. Both Pro-Ject's Wash It 2 and the Spin-Clean fluid are alcohol-free. If you are cleaning vintage pressings from the 1950s and 1960s, which used different PVC formulations with higher plasticiser content, avoiding IPA entirely is the conservative and sensible choice.

One thing to be definitive about: never use tap water on a record. Australian tap water, depending on your state and suburb, contains chlorine, fluoride, and dissolved minerals that will leave residue in the groove. Use distilled water. It costs a few dollars a litre from the supermarket or auto parts store.

Sleeves: the most underrated part of record care

The paper inner sleeve that comes with most new records, and that has been sitting inside most secondhand records for decades, is actively harmful. Paper sheds fibres that lodge in the groove. It generates static that attracts dust. Older paper sleeves absorb moisture and can harbour mould. Every time you slide a record in and out of a paper sleeve, you are lightly abrading the playing surface.

Replace them. The industry standard is the Mobile Fidelity (MoFi) Original Master inner sleeve: a three-ply construction with a paper core sandwiched between two layers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These are the same sleeves MoFi uses for its own audiophile pressings, and they have been in production for over forty years. Anti-static, non-abrasive, and widely available in packs of fifty. They cost roughly a dollar per sleeve, give or take.

For outer protection, clear polypropylene outer sleeves prevent ring wear on the jacket (the circular imprint left by the record pressing against the cover from the inside) and keep dust and moisture out. These are cheap and worth using on every record in your collection.

When you clean a record, always put it into a fresh inner sleeve. Putting a clean record back into a dirty sleeve defeats the purpose entirely.

Storing records in Australia

The recommended conditions for vinyl storage, per the Library of Congress and the US National Archives, are a temperature of 18 to 21°C and relative humidity of 40 to 50 per cent. Records should be stored vertically, never stacked flat. They should be kept out of direct sunlight.

These are sensible guidelines. They are also, for many Australian homes, difficult to maintain without some effort.

Heat

PVC becomes increasingly pliable above about 24°C. At sustained temperatures above 30°C, warping becomes a real risk, even for records stored vertically. This matters in Australia because plenty of homes, particularly older houses and apartments without air conditioning, will hit those temperatures regularly through summer. A west-facing room in a Sydney terrace in January can easily reach 35°C or more in the afternoon.

If you do not have air conditioning in your storage area, keep your records in the coolest room in the house, away from exterior walls that absorb afternoon sun. Internal rooms and ground floors are generally more temperature-stable. If you are out all day and the house heats up, that is fine as long as the records are not in direct sunlight or wedged against a hot wall. It is sustained high temperatures that cause warping, not brief spikes.

Never store records in a car, a garage, a shed, or an attic. This should go without saying, but it needs saying.

Humidity and mould

This is the bigger problem for Australian collectors, particularly in Sydney, Brisbane, and anywhere north of about the Tropic of Capricorn. Summer humidity in Sydney regularly sits above 60 per cent. In tropical Queensland and the Northern Territory, it can sit above 80 per cent for months.

Mould grows on the organic components of a record: the paper sleeve, the cardboard jacket, the paper label. Once mould gets into the groove, it is very difficult to remove completely. Ultrasonic cleaning is the most effective method, but even that may not fully restore a badly affected record.

Prevention is straightforward: keep humidity below 55 per cent in your storage area. A small dehumidifier in the room where you keep your records is a worthwhile investment if you live in a humid part of the country. A basic digital hygrometer (under $20 from any hardware store) lets you monitor conditions. If you notice humidity climbing, run the dehumidifier or the air conditioning.

For collections stored in humid environments, silica gel sachets placed among the records can absorb excess moisture. Polypropylene outer sleeves help too, because they create a moisture barrier around the jacket.

Static and dry heat

At the other end of the spectrum, collectors in drier parts of Australia (inland New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia) deal with static electricity. Low humidity increases static charge on the record surface, which attracts dust and makes brushing less effective because the dust is electrostatically bonded to the vinyl.

The AudioQuest brush helps here because it discharges static as it cleans. An anti-static gun (the Milty Zerostat is the classic, though it is increasingly hard to find; the Furutech DeStat is a pricier alternative) can neutralise surface charge before play. And replacing paper sleeves with poly-lined or HDPE sleeves reduces static generation during handling.

A note on vintage jazz pressings

If you collect original pressings or Japanese pressings from the 1970s and 1980s, the stakes are higher. These records cannot be replaced. A 1964 Blue Note pressing of Speak No Evil with the New York USA address on the label, or a 1975 King Records Japanese pressing of Maiden Voyage, is a one-off. Damage it through careless cleaning or storage and you have lost something that is not coming back.

For records like these: always wet clean before first play, using an alcohol-free solution or distilled water only. Handle by the edges and label only. Store in MoFi or equivalent poly-lined inner sleeves. Keep the original inner sleeve if it has liner notes or artwork, but store it behind the record in the jacket rather than around the record itself. And if a record has visible mould, do not play it. Clean it first. Playing a mouldy record grinds the mould spores into the groove and can damage both the vinyl and your stylus.

The same care applies to modern audiophile pressings (Blue Note Tone Poets, Acoustic Sounds series, Craft Recordings reissues). These are well-pressed on quality vinyl and deserve to be treated accordingly.
