Ltd.

In December 1954, Sarah Vaughan recorded nine tracks for Norman Granz's EmArcy label over two or three sessions in New York. The album was titled simply Sarah Vaughan; later reissues added Brown's name to the title. Clifford Brown was 23 years old and at the height of his powers with the Max Roach quintet. Vaughan's working trio of Jimmy Jones on piano, Joe Benjamin on bass and Roy Haynes on drums formed the rhythm section, augmented by Paul Quinichette on tenor saxophone, Herbie Mann on flute and Brown on trumpet. Ernie Wilkins arranged and conducted. Bob Shad produced for EmArcy.

The nine tracks are drawn from the American Songbook: George Gershwin's "Embraceable You," Vernon Duke's "September Song," the title "Jim," Cole Porter standards and others. "Embraceable You" features only the rhythm section — Brown, Quinichette and Mann are absent. On every other track, Brown's trumpet is a continuous presence, responding to Vaughan's lines with a complementary voice rather than competing with them. Brown died 18 months after the session was recorded, and when he did, Vaughan removed "You're Not the Kind" from her repertoire permanently. It was a song she had recorded once before, with a different trumpeter who also died young; the combination of resonances made it unsingable for her.
