Twelve tracks across four sides.

By the time the West Coast Get Down took shape, Coleman and Cameron Graves were the collective's two keyboard players, and Coleman's vocodered funk sat alongside Graves's post-bop intensity as opposite ends of what the group could do. Resistance is his solo debut, released on Brainfeeder the same year Kamasi Washington's Heaven and Earth came out on Young, and it makes no apology for being a funk record rather than a jazz one. Coleman uses vocoders, synthesisers and keyboards to build a sound closer to Prince and George Clinton than to anything on the Impulse! or Blue Note catalogues, but the harmonic sophistication behind the grooves comes from the same jazz training that produced The Epic.

"Live For Today" opens with a vocoder soul intro that signals the album's territory immediately. "All Around The World" and "Sexy" push into boogie and disco. "Giant Feelings" runs to nearly six minutes with Patrice Quinn's vocal and a production approach that one reviewer compared to Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. The album was recorded across five studios in the LA area, including Coleman's own Bran Bran's Magical Kingdom Studios in Van Nuys. Coleman produced and played most of the instruments himself.
