What they shared was quiet, virgin vinyl and tight quality control, usually in shorter runs than the American originals, which is why so many turn up today flat, clean and near silent in the groove.

For a collector that adds up to a real advantage. On 15 May 1953 the five most important figures in bebop shared a stage in Toronto: Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell at the piano, Charles Mingus on bass and Max Roach on drums. It should have been a coronation. In fact the hall was half empty, its audience drawn away by a Rocky Marciano title fight televised the same night, and the musicians had been at odds for years. None of that reaches the music. What was captured is bebop at its highest pitch, five masters pushing each other through "Salt Peanuts", "Hot House" and a blazing "A Night In Tunisia", with Parker and Gillespie trading phrases like the old sparring partners they were. It was the last time the two of them were recorded together. The First Great Quintet was still two years away. What the three sessions document is a trumpeter working out what to do with the bebop vocabulary he had learned from Parker and Gillespie, and the results are less consistent than his later records but frequently startling. The May 1952 date, his first for Blue Note, has Jackie McLean a few days short of his twenty-first birthday alongside J.J. Johnson, Gil Coggins, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke, and McLean's own "Donna" is one of two tracks from it here. The April 1953 session swaps in Jimmy Heath on tenor and his brother Percy on bass with Blakey on drums, and the material is drawn from the bebop composer's canon: Bud Powell's "Tempus Fugit," Gillespie and Gil Fuller's "I Waited for You," Ray Brown's "Ray's Idea." Both of the 1953 tracks here are alternate masters, which Lion added to fill the extra space the 12-inch format gave him.

The March 1954 quartet session is where the record settles. No second horn, just Davis with Horace Silver, Percy Heath and Blakey, and it accounts for six of the eleven tracks. "Well You Needn't" is Monk's, and Davis takes it without any of the angularity Monk brought to his own material. "It Never Entered My Mind" is the ballad, played with the Harmon mute and the economy that would define him within two years. "Take-Off," "Weirdo," "The Leap" and "Lazy Susan" fill the rest. Silver was 25 and had joined Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and his comping here is already unmistakable. Alfred Lion produced all three sessions. Doug Hawkins recorded the 1952 and 1953 dates at WOR Studios on Broadway, and Rudy Van Gelder recorded the 1954 session at Hackensack and remastered the earlier material for this compilation. The arrangement that Evans produced from the second movement (Adagio) took the 16 minutes of side A to execute, and the session on November 20, 1959 was by Davis's account one of the most physically demanding recording dates of his career. The difficulty is audible in the best way. Davis's trumpet sounds exposed against the orchestral backdrop, carrying a long, mournful melody through a web of French horns, harp, flute and bass clarinet that Evans voices in clusters so dense they shimmer rather than resolve. There's almost no improvisation in the conventional sense. Davis plays the line Evans wrote for him, and what makes it work is the tone: dry, precise, unadorned, sitting on top of the orchestra rather than blending into it. "Will O' The Wisp," from de Falla's ballet El Amor Brujo, is the shortest track and the most contained, Davis's flugelhorn carrying a fragmented melody over muted brass.

Side B is where Evans's original compositions take over. "The Pan Piper" was inspired by a field recording of Peruvian music, its melody drawn from a single instrument against a rhythmic backdrop that Elvin Jones anchors with hand percussion rather than the drum kit he played in Coltrane's quartet. "Saeta" reimagines the vocal form sung during Semana Santa processions in Seville: Davis's trumpet functions as the human voice, crying out above a slow march. "Solea," the 12-minute closing piece, is based on the soleá, one of the foundational forms of flamenco, and is the track where Davis sounds most like himself, stretching further from the written material than anywhere else on the album.

This is the 1981 Japanese stereo reissue on CBS/Sony 18AP 2057.

Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert | 2LP - 1975 Japanese ECM Gatefold (PA-6053~54, Trio-Kenwood Corporation)

Keith Jarrett arrived at the Cologne Opera House on the night of 24 January 1975 in no shape to make history. He had driven overnight from Switzerland in Manfred Eicher's small car, barely slept, and was in enough back pain to be wearing a brace. Then he saw the piano. He had asked for a Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand. What the staff had wheeled out by mistake was a small Bösendorfer rehearsal instrument, out of tune, thin up top, weak in the bass, with keys and pedals that stuck. He nearly refused to play. The teenage promoter Vera Brandes talked him into it, and close to midnight, in front of a sold-out house, he sat down and improvised. Everything you hear was invented on the spot. Jarrett worked around the piano's faults, keeping to the register that still rang true and rolling long left-hand vamps under it, and the whole thing runs a little over an hour with not a note of it written down.

ECM put the recording out at the end of 1975, and it went on to sell in numbers no solo piano record ever had, more than three and a half million copies, still the best-selling solo album in jazz. Fifty years on it has hardened into the standard reference for what one player can do alone at a keyboard, and in 2025 the American Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. He had joined for the previous album, Black Market (1976), replacing Alphonso Johnson on a couple of tracks, but here he plays bass on everything except the percussion feature, and his contribution goes well beyond the bass chair. He co-produced the album, wrote two of its most celebrated pieces ("Teen Town," where he plays both bass and drums, and "Havona"), and shaped the sound of the record through his knowledge of the studio. His fretless bass functions as a third melodic voice, dancing above the range where a bass is supposed to sit. "Birdland" is the track everyone knows, Zawinul's tribute to the New York club where he had heard Basie, Ellington, Armstrong and Davis, and where he met his wife. The Oberheim synthesiser creates the illusion of a horn section, Jaco plays the melody in harmonics at the introduction, and the whole thing builds through section after section without a wasted bar. It reached the pop charts, which almost no instrumental jazz recording did in 1977. "A Remark You Made" follows, a slow, wordless ballad with Shorter's soprano saxophone floating over Zawinul's Rhodes and Jaco's bass, the most purely beautiful thing on the album.

The rest of the record moves between moods and textures. "Teen Town" is Jaco's showcase, fast and manic, with his bass carrying the melody. "Harlequin" is a Shorter ballad. "Rumba Mamá" (recorded live at the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival) is a percussion duet between Acuña and Badrena, all timbales and voices. "Palladium" is a Shorter piece with a driving Latin feel. "The Juggler" brings in Zawinul on guitar and tabla. "Havona" closes the album with Jaco's most harmonically ambitious composition, a fast, complex piece that gives everyone room to stretch. Zawinul had become the band's de facto director in the studio by this point, his synthesisers dictating the textures and his arrangements carefully planned, with less of the free improvisation of the group's early years. Engineer David Jones' recording, later mastered at Plaza Sound Studios for this reissue, captures both the intimacy of the club and the clarity of each instrument.

Bob James - One Vinyl LP - Limited Edition Japanese CTI Reissue

Bob James' debut as a leader for CTI Records, One established the keyboardist and arranger as a major force in 1970s fusion and jazz-funk. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio between February and April 1974 with an all-star cast and released in this limited edition Japanese pressing in 1978 as part of CTI's Original 1500 Series, the album showcases James' gifts as both a Fender Rhodes virtuoso and a sophisticated arranger capable of blending jazz improvisation with lush orchestration and infectious grooves.

The album opens with "Valley Of The Shadows", immediately establishing the CTI aesthetic: James' electric piano over Steve Gadd's crisp drumming, supported by strings, horns, and Ralph MacDonald's percussion. The production is immaculate, every element perfectly balanced in Rudy Van Gelder's engineering and producer Creed Taylor's vision of accessible, beautifully recorded jazz.

"In The Garden" and "Soulero" continue the fusion of jazz sophistication with pop accessibility. James' arrangements incorporate full string and horn sections (featuring jazz luminaries like Thad Jones, Jon Faddis, and Lew Soloff among the trumpeters) without ever sounding overly orchestrated or saccharine. His keyboard work balances technical facility with melodic clarity, influenced equally by bebop pianists and contemporary R&B.

Side two opens with "Night On Bald Mountain", James' audacious jazz-funk reimagining of Modest Mussorgsky's classical composition. This track exemplifies the early 1970s fusion movement's ambition, taking a 19th-century Russian tone poem and transforming it into a vehicle for contemporary jazz improvisation. Steve Gadd's drumming here is particularly remarkable, his precision and musicality making complex rhythms sound effortless.

"Feel Like Making Love", originally a Roberta Flack hit, receives an instrumental treatment that emphasises its romantic melody while adding jazz harmonic sophistication. The album closes with "Nautilus", which became one of the most sampled tracks in hip-hop history. Built on a hypnotic groove with Idris Muhammad replacing Gadd on drums, the track's infectious bass line (Gary King) and James' electric piano riff have been sampled by countless artists, making this one of the most culturally influential jazz-funk recordings of the era.

The personnel throughout is exceptional. Beyond the rhythm section of King, Gadd, and Muhammad, the album features virtuoso trumpeter Jon Faddis, Count Basie Orchestra veteran Thad Jones, and studio guitarist Richie Resnicoff. The string section, featuring some of New York's finest classical musicians, adds lushness without overwhelming the jazz elements.

This Japanese pressing, manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd. and distributed through their CTI partnership, represents the label's commitment to superior vinyl quality. Part of the CTI Original 1500 Series, this limited edition reissue offers the pristine sound quality essential to appreciating Van Gelder's engineering and the album's detailed arrangements. The CTI aesthetic of beautiful packaging and audiophile-quality pressing makes this an attractive edition for both James collectors and CTI completists.
