He started on drums, switched to guitar at nineteen after hearing Wes Montgomery, graduated from UCLA in music composition and theory in 1969, and arrived in New York in time to become one of the most in-demand session guitarists of the 1970s, working across jazz, pop and R\u0026amp;B with Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, the Brecker Brothers, Joe Zawinul's Weather Update and Blood Sweat and Tears, and contributing to Steely Dan's \"Aja\" after engineer Elliot Scheiner recommended him to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Bobby Colomby and Bob James signed him to Columbia Records, and between 1977 and 1979 he released three well-received fusion albums, \"Tightrope,\" \"The Blue Man\" and \"Arrows,\" all featuring Michael and Randy Brecker, David Sanborn, Don Grolnick, Will Lee and Steve Gadd, a band that was essentially the first-call New York session pool of the late 1970s playing his compositions. Columbia dropped him in 1980, and his response was to record \"Evidence,\" a solo acoustic guitar album built around a nine-song Thelonious Monk medley and named for a Monk composition, which announced a more searching direction entirely. The Eyewitness quartet that followed, with contrabassist Anthony Jackson, percussionist Manolo Badrena and drummer Steve Jordan, developed a post-bop electric style that had largely shed the fusion markers of the Columbia years. Japanese Trio Records pressings of the early Eyewitness albums from 1981 to 1983 are among the most collected of his catalogue. Through the 1970s he was one of the busiest players in New York, the man on call for Steely Dan, the Brecker Brothers and dozens of others, but the four musicians here had found something of their own jamming after hours during the sessions for Steely Dan's \u003cem\u003eGaucho\u003c\/em\u003e. Khan put down the Telecaster and the big-band arrangements, picked up a Gibson with a touch of reverb, and let the band play. What they made is groove and atmosphere before anything else: Anthony Jackson's six-string bass laying down lines no one else would think of, Steve Jordan and the former Weather Report percussionist Manolo Badrena weaving Latin rhythm underneath, and Khan's guitar hanging chords in the air rather than racing through them. \"Guy Lafleur\", named like several of his tunes after a hockey player, builds to a bass solo fusion listeners still talk about. It is relaxed on the surface and taut underneath, and Khan has called it his favourite of all his records.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quartet became a proper band. \u003cem\u003eEyewitness\u003c\/em\u003e opened a trilogy that continued with \u003cem\u003eModern Times\u003c\/em\u003e in 1982 and \u003cem\u003eCasa Loco\u003c\/em\u003e in 1983, and its loose, interactive approach influenced a generation of players who wanted something more exploratory than the slick studio fusion of the era. The cover is by Jean-Michel Folon, the Belgian artist the title track is dedicated to.
