Johnny Hartman

Johnny Hartman was an American jazz singer known for his rich baritone voice and masterful interpretations of romantic ballads. Born in Louisiana in 1923 and raised in Chicago, his first professional break came in 1946 when he won a singing contest at the Apollo Theater, leading to engagements with Earl Hines and later Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Though his cool, understated style contrasted with bebop's rapid-fire energy, Hartman is best remembered for his 1963 collaboration with saxophonist John Coltrane, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, a landmark album and the only recording Coltrane ever made with a vocalist.

Despite critical acclaim, Hartman struggled for mainstream recognition throughout his career. Coltrane solos between and around the vocal lines, then pulls back. On three tracks, "My One and Only Love," "Lush Life" and "You Are Too Beautiful", Coltrane later overdubbed additional saxophone phrases behind Hartman's voice; a new master incorporating these overdubs, with additional echo added by Van Gelder, became the standard version.
