The title track has become a jazz standard, its evocative melody and sophisticated harmonic movement capturing the feeling of oceanic voyage, while tracks like "Dolphin Dance" and "The Eye Of The Hurricane" demonstrate Hancock's gift for memorable themes and adventurous improvisation. Released on 24 September 2021 as part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, this worldwide audiophile reissue was mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog tapes and manufactured at Germany's Optimal plant on 180g vinyl.

The quintet represents mid-1960s jazz at its peak: Hubbard's powerful, lyrical trumpet, Coleman's robust tenor saxophone, and the rhythm section of Carter and Williams (both from Miles Davis' second great quintet alongside Hancock) create ideal conditions for exploring Hancock's modal compositions. His piano work balances harmonic sophistication with rhythmic invention, comping creating textures as interesting as his solo statements. The modal approach allows freer improvisation than bebop's rapid chord changes while maintaining more structure than complete free jazz, Hancock's compositions providing memorable melodies and rich harmonic colours.

Beyond the famous title track, "Dolphin Dance" showcases Hancock's gift for writing complex yet singable melodies, while "Survival Of The Fittest" and "Little One" explore different facets of modal jazz. "The Eye Of The Hurricane" creates atmospheric calm before returning to intensity, demonstrating the nautical theme's conceptual coherence. Hancock wanted to hear colours, not soloists. He chose three instruments from the lower and middle registers (Thad Jones's flugelhorn, Peter Phillips's bass trombone, Jerry Dodgion's alto flute) and wrote parts that blend and shimmer around the piano rather than stepping forward from it. On the title track, the three horns enter together in a soft, sustained chord that sounds like a single instrument with an impossibly wide tonal range. Hancock solos over and through these textures, his piano the only voice that improvises. "Toys" uses the same approach at a faster tempo, the horn voicings thickening behind the melody before pulling back to let the trio breathe. "Goodbye To Childhood" closes side B with Hancock and Carter alone for long stretches, the horns entering sparingly and only to add weight at the piece's most open moments. Jones arranged the horn parts (uncredited on the original release), drawing on the same ear for rich, unusual voicings that made his Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra one of the most distinctive ensembles of the period. Hancock later said his thinking was shaped by listening to Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson and Jones himself.

Three years had passed since Maiden Voyage. The harmonies on Speak Like A Child are freer and harder to pin to conventional chord progressions. "Riot" (which also appeared on Davis's Nefertiti) opens the album with the most rhythmically aggressive piece, Mickey Roker pushing the tempo in a physical, driving style. "First Trip" is Carter's only composition here, written for his son Ron Jr. "The Sorcerer" closes the album with a piece Hancock wrote for Davis and had already recorded with the Davis Quintet the year before.

This is the 1985 Japanese reissue on Blue Note BNJ 71077, from the Blue Note 4000 Series Original Collection 100, manufactured by Toshiba EMI in a gatefold (Unipack) sleeve.

Vinyl: EX
Sleeve: VG+
Obi: None

Our grading system explained here.
Photo is of the actual item.

Herbie Hancock - Sextant | Vinyl LP - 1973 Japanese CBS/Sony (SOPL-190, SX-74 Sound Series)

The Mwandishi band was earning $160 a week, travelling by van between gigs, setting up their own PA and tearing it down after every show. The music they were making had almost no commercial audience in the US, but it sounded like nothing else anyone was recording. "Rain Dance" opens with Dr. Patrick Gleeson's ARP 2600 synthesiser sending pulses across the stereo field while Hancock's clavinet (run through a Fender Fuzz-Wah and Echoplex) builds a repeating rhythmic figure underneath. Buck Clarke's congas enter. Billy Hart's drums lock in. Then Henderson's trumpet and Priester's trombones (he plays alto, tenor and bass trombone across the album) add melodic fragments that drift in and out of the texture. Buster Williams plays Fender bass with wah-wah and fuzz, the signal so heavily processed it sounds closer to a synthesiser than a bass guitar. Maupin switches between soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, piccolo flute and, on one track, a kazoo. "Hidden Shadows" is the most rhythmically direct piece, the closest thing to a groove on the album. "Hornets" takes the entire second side and refuses to resolve. It builds in layers, the density increasing until the instruments merge into a single churning mass, then pulls apart and starts building again.

This was the third album in the Mwandishi trilogy, following Mwandishi (1971) and Crossings (1972) on Warner Bros. Hancock later said he had spent too long "exploring the upper atmosphere of music" and needed to reconnect with the earth.
