{"title":"Doug Carn","description":"\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eDoug Carn grew up in St. Augustine, Florida in a musical household, his mother a classically trained pianist who had gigged with Dizzy Gillespie, his uncle a guide to jazz records, and was playing piano at five, alto saxophone at eight and oboe in high school before studying oboe and composition at Jacksonville University. After Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination in 1968, he and his wife Jean moved to Los Angeles with a group of Atlanta musicians who all relocated together, landing in an apartment building on Sunset Boulevard that also housed Mandrill, the Chambers Brothers, Janis Joplin and the nascent Earth, Wind and Fire. Maurice White was going to drum on Carn's debut album but Carn wanted something heavier. Instead he found his way to Gene Russell, who had heard about his practice of writing lyrics to existing jazz compositions: Wayne Shorter's \"Infant Eyes,\" Coltrane's \"A Love Supreme,\" Bobby Hutcherson's \"Little B's Poem\" and Horace Silver's \"Peace\" all received words. Russell signed him to Black Jazz Records, and between 1971 and 1974 Carn recorded four albums with Jean as featured vocalist that became the label's defining statements: \"Infant Eyes\" (1971), \"Spirit of the New Land\" (1972), \"Revelation\" (1973) and \"Adam's Apple\" (1974). The music fused post-bop piano and organ, spiritual jazz harmonic language, R\u0026amp;B and funk grooves, and lyrically charged vocal performances into something that had no direct precedent. He later converted to Islam and recorded the jazz-funk \"Al Rahman!\" in 1977, worked as a sideman with Nat Adderley, Earth Wind and Fire, Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine, and returned to recording in the 1990s and 2000s. The 2020 Jazz Is Dead collaboration with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad introduced him to a new generation of listeners. Its signature artist was the keyboardist Doug Carn, and \u003cem\u003eSpirit of the New Land\u003c\/em\u003e, from 1972, is one of his finest for the label. Carn's idea was to put words to jazz. He wrote his own spiritual, Afrocentric lyrics and set them to instrumental pieces, and his wife Jean Carn sang them in a clear, soaring voice that lifts the whole record. Here she sings Carn's words to Miles Davis's \"Blue In Green\" and Lee Morgan's \"Search For The New Land\" alongside originals like \"Arise And Shine\" and \"My Spirit\". The band is strong: Charles Tolliver, who co-founded Strata-East, on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, George Harper on reeds and Alphonse Mouzon on drums.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCarn's run of Black Jazz albums became touchstones of vocal spiritual jazz, records that later got dug back up by rare-groove collectors and sampled by hip-hop producers, while Jean Carn went on to a career as a soul star at Philadelphia International. Original Black Jazz pressings have long been collector's items.
