He taught himself piano as a child and picked up tenor at thirteen, and by his early twenties was gigging around Chicago with Max Roach, Sonny Stitt and various R\u0026amp;B groups before moving to New York in 1957. His first album, \"Blowing in from Chicago\" (Blue Note, 1957), co-led with Gilmore and backed by Horace Silver, Curly Russell and Art Blakey, announced a saxophonist with a sound rooted in the Chicago tenor tradition but with enough harmonic ambition to hold his own in the company of the era's best rhythm sections. A run of Blue Note and Riverside albums followed, sideman stints with Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson, Kenny Dorham and Max Roach, and then a period in Charles Mingus's sextet for the 1964 European tour alongside Eric Dolphy, a trip whose intensity affected both players. He toured West Africa with Randy Weston for the US State Department in 1967 and spent time in Europe before returning to New York and eventually recording \"Glass Bead Games\" (Strata-East, 1974), a double album with two alternating quartets, Billy Higgins the only constant alongside Jordan, and Cedar Walton, Stanley Cowell, Sam Jones and Bill Lee rotating through. The title is from Hermann Hesse's 1943 novel, and the album is among the most collected Strata-East titles, a record that sits at the precise intersection of hard bop, spiritual jazz and the post-Coltrane avant-garde. Two young tenor players out of Chicago, Clifford Jordan and John Gilmore, walked into Van Gelder's studio in March 1957 and squared up over one of the strongest rhythm sections in hard bop: Horace Silver, Curly Russell and Art Blakey, the engine of the early Jazz Messengers. What follows is a blowing session in the best sense, standards and originals played with room to stretch and something to prove. They open on John Neely's \"Status Quo\", take Charlie Parker's \"Billie's Bounce\" at a canter and slow into Gigi Gryce's \"Blue Lights\", with two Jordan originals and a Horace Silver line filling out the rest. The two tenors are well matched but distinct, Jordan rounder and more lyrical, Gilmore harder-edged and more oblique, and Blakey drives the whole thing the way only he could.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe record carries an odd weight in hindsight. It was Clifford Jordan's first session as a leader, and he went on to a long, well-regarded career that never quite made him famous, from his late-fifties sides through to a classic 1970s date for Strata-East. For John Gilmore it was the only time he ever led a session. He spent almost forty years inside Sun Ra's Arkestra, rarely stepping out, which makes this one of the very few chances to hear one of the most admired tenor players in jazz simply blowing on standards.
